I’m confused

why do I need to set my VAT to invoice accounting to de-register?

I'm trying to shut down my company and FA says

"VAT registration status cannot be changed to de-registered unless you are on the invoice accounting basis"

why is this?

Thanks for your question.

FreeAgent can, at the moment, only handle de-registration for users who are invoice accounting for VAT

Thanks for your prompt response. I think the answer, then, is that this is a missing feature since it doesn't make sense to me to reset my VAT accounting.

Bit late for Steve Freeman's benefit but you can actually change from cash accounting to invoice accounting for the currently open VAT period.

Go to current VAT return page in Taxes > VAT. Click Edit Details. Change accounting basis from Cash to Invoice.
