GoCardless recurring invoices

How do I set up the invoice so that clients can pay recurring invoices via GoCardLess? It seems that they can only pay each invoice one by one rather than actually set up a recurring DD. Is this the case?

Hi Michael,

In the first instance clients will only be able to pay one-off payments through GoCardless.

GoCardless does allow recurring payments through pre-authorisation and this is something we'll look to add in a future release.

Kind regards
Roan

Hi Roan,

This is something we're interested in for our annual hosting payments for clients. If I go about setting up recurring payments through GoCardless (without FreeAgent support for now) am I going to be able to integrate them in future or am I best waiting for the integration before doing it?

Kind Regards,

Lea.

Just had an email from Gocardless asking why we've not started using it with FE yet, and we've told them that we don't see the point until it offers something practically over and above invoicing clients and them paying us via BACS, which they all do quite happily and which costs us nothing.

Being able to vary amounts and take that automatically once a month/quarter/year would work much better, and mean that the GC function practically does something additional for their fee (though we appreciate there are/may be other reasons we should probably be using direct debits rather than BACS

Its great that this is finally here, it just needs that little extra push to be awsome. It needs recurrency.

Would love to be able to use FA and Go Cardless for subscription based monthly billing payment by DD via go cardless - Would like the ability to increase DD subscription payment without having to cancel and setup and get authorisation for new DD each time. Any time frames on the integration work?

Common guys the point of get satisfaction is to hear what your users are asking for and act on it. Even if it's just a post to give us some time scales.

Hi

I second Firsts Exact's post.

We currently have clients paying hosting via standing order costing us nothing.

Variable amounts and reccurence, are extremely important for us to start making proper use of the gocardless feature.

Also customising the payment page would be extremely useful. There isn't really a benefit to us having the gocardless logo on the payment screen. Perhaps just option for a logo and a couple of fields for us to enter in css colours for different elements.

Thanks

Matt

Hi everyone,

Thanks for all the feedback. There's clearly a lot of demand for pre-authorisation of payments through GoCardless and we're listening to that.

We've been working on designing the workflow for this recently - it's surprisingly involved. Once the planning and design is complete we'll have a good idea of the amount of development work needed and where that sits with other priorities.

So I can't give you an exact timescale, but this is definitely something we want to work on in the nearish future.

Just wanted to add my $0.02 to this thread.

Recurring invoices + GoCardless seem like a perfect match so would much appreciate knocking it up the priority list.

@Matthew James Crane - might be interested to know that the payment page pulls css from the custom template file - so you can already do that.

For instance, I find the Endlink - powered by FreeAgent - fairly objectionable as it sticking another companies logo on my invoices so I simply removed it by adding

#endlinks {display:none!important;}

Don't forget you can also add content via CSS via:

.whateverfield:before {
content: "Ta Da: ";
}

So you have limited customisation already.

Recurring invoices is utterly important to us - GoCardless have just told us that we won't be able to re-link any recurring transactions with a recurring profile in FreeAgent when it becomes live, so really we've got to wait until FreeAgent get this feature built before we can start collecting money - this is the most frustrating email I've had in a long while and may have to stop using GoCardless until this becomes available. Frustrating, got so excited only to find it's only half baked.

Wow - this thread got popular! My opinion is that it's ready when it's ready - if you rewind a month we didn't have any payment options so I'm happy to wait until FreeAgent think they've got it working properly and not before (as they always do).

Keep up the good work and will look forward to this feature when it's available.

Gocardless has just added a new feature called paylinks. You can log into your account and set up a recurring direct debit nice and easily and it will generate a link you can send to your customer. Obviously doesn't link with freeagent in anyway but it's a good workaround until freeagent have sorted things out.

This will certainly get me out a spot for now.

We've started doing that, with the PayLinks, which has been working really well. The part that makes me nervous is that when FreeAgent does finally integrate the recurring payments, we're going to have a load of direct debits setup that aren't linked to FreeAgent, even though they could be. I've been asking FreeAgent to make sure this is accounted for, but I haven't had anything positive back yet

Also very interested in seeing this functionality added. Paul (post above) raises an interesting point as well. If we use GoCardless Paylinks for now will we be able to get this properly hooked in to FreeAgent once recurring payments via GoCardless arrives

Sorry, but this is absolutely ludicrous. How can recurring payments not be integrated yet? GoCardless have an incredibly intuitive API, that most half-decent developers should be able to grasp. Brushing this to the sidelines is just agitating me and many other FA customers.

FA prides itself on helping businesses, businesses rely on recurring payments, it's integral to every business.

Can no-one at FA give us any timelines?

Any updates on a time line for this going into 2013?

Just had a whole load of recurring payments go out and this would have really helped...

Hi everyone, here's my bit.

I've been researching GoCardless in mind of recurring billing for a couple of days now.

As I'm new to doing my accounts online (currently my accountant does them via Sage) I have the luxury of choice and am not heavily invested in FreeAgent unlike some of the previous comments.

I've researched the three sites that integrate with GoCardless: FreeAgent, KashFlow and Clearbooks. Out of the 3 I want to use FreeAgent, it's leagues ahead with design and usability as well as having most of the core features I need. The support is excellent both via email and on the phone.

However by not sorting out the pre-authorisation I simply can't move to using it. It's a really big shame and I'm a little gutted. I will be moving to KashFlow I think from here ... but reluctantly!

I agree with some of the comments above, you could give timescales - even if it were to say it's expected this year would be a start.

Hello everyone,

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you.

Unfortunately, while we know how useful supporting pre-authorised payments for GoCardless will be for many of you, it's not on our short term roadmap. I'd definitely like to revisit it in the future but it won't be in the next few months, as we've got some important compliance work around Payroll to focus on.

Sorry for the disappointing news, and we'll keep you posted as and when things change.

All the best
Roan

Is it on the list for future development though? I'd like a clear answer as to whether this will be on the "roadmap" at all.

GoCardless list all their partners here...I understand that the 3 other applications that support full pre-authorisations are Kashflow, Clearbooks and Quick File..

https://gocardless.com/partners/..

It's a shame that FreeAgent has been slow to implement this as 90% of the benefits to using GoCardless is with the pre-authorised Direct Debits.

Go Cardless now have a beta billing system which allows monthly recurring billing, and allows you to vary the amount collected form the customer each month. We are on their pilot for it, and and it looks great so far. The only problem is there's no FA integration. I'd really like to add my voice to the list of people asking for this feature sooner rather than later.
